Excursion to Antequera and the Torcal from Granada

antequera y el torcal

With this excursion, you can visit from Granada, the "City of Churches," as Antequera is known. The municipality brings together a vast monumental and historical-artistic heritage with remains from the megalithic era to contemporary times and elements of interest from each historical period; the dolmens, Roman villas, the impressive medieval Muslim fortress, the Collegiate Church of Santa María in an early Renaissance style, and the numerous baroque temples that the city boasts.

The nickname "City of Churches" is given to Antequera due to its 33 temples, making it the Spanish municipality with the most churches per inhabitant.

The tour departing from Granada makes its first stop in the city of Antequera, just 1.20 hours from the center of the Granada capital. In the city, you will explore its streets and make a stop at La Colegiata de Santa María, from which you can enjoy an impressive view of Antequera. Visitors will continue exploring the city and can enjoy the Roman Archaeological Site, as well as the Arab Fortress.

Entering the natural surroundings near Antequera, visitors will reach the Site of the Dolmens of Antequera. A natural space composed of the Dolmens of Viera, Menga, and the Tholos de El Romeral, as well as the natural areas of La Peña de los Enamorados and El Torcal.

The visitor will be able to enjoy the natural surroundings of La Peña and venture into the heart of El Torcal, a karstic landscape declared a World Heritage Site. They can visit the various dolmens in this area and explore one of the greatest examples of megalithism in Europe. Additionally, they can visit Paleolithic and Neolithic settlements in the region.
